Commemoration of victims of radiation accidents and disasters

On the eve of commemoration of the victims of radiation accidents and catastrophes, Associate Professor of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences O.O. Kolyevatov. held a conversation with students of higher education at the Institute of Electronic and Information Technologies on the topic “April 26 – International Chernobyl Remembrance Day”.

37 years ago, on the night of April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred, caused by the explosion and subsequent destruction of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The destruction was explosive in nature, the reactor was completely destroyed and a large amount of radioactive substances was released into the environment. The radioactive cloud from the Chernobyl accident covered not only Ukraine, but also Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Belgium , Slovenia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France, Great Britain and the eastern part of the USA. About 200,000 people were evacuated from the contaminated areas.

The number of victims of the Chernobyl accident can be determined only approximately. In addition to the dead NPP workers and firefighters, they should include sick servicemen and civilians who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident, and residents of areas exposed to radioactive contamination. Determining which part of the diseases appeared as a result of the accident is a very difficult task for medicine and statistics. It is believed that the majority of deaths related to radiation exposure have been or will be caused by cancer.

On this day, let’s honor the liquidators for their courage and bravery! We convey the most sincere words of gratitude and an earthly bow for a high civic position and bow our heads to the bright memory of those whose lives were cut short by a deadly atom. Their feat has forever entered the annals of courage and patriotism of the Ukrainian people.

Glory to Ukraine!

Glory to heroes!
