Summing up the results of the School of Tutoring (second intake) within the framework of the project Erasmus+ КА2 PROMENT

On 24-26 September, the Chernihiv Polytechnic National University hosted the second School of Tutoring within the framework of the international project Erasmus+ KA2 PROMENT “Promoting professional education and students engagement through comprehensive mentoring and tutoring system at HEIs”.

The purpose of the School of Tutoring was to provide students with the necessary knowledge and competencies to participate in the tutoring programme for first-year students, which was piloted at the university on 1 September. The training was attended by students who were recommended by student self-government bodies as tutors (student curators) for the first-year academic groups of the 2024 enrolment.
The School of Tutoring was held in a mixed format. On the first day, the participants were greeted by Olha Melnyk, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogy Work and Social Development, who stressed the importance of tutoring at the university and the special role of tutors in providing assistance to first-year students on a “peer-to-peer” basis.

Training sessions at the School of Tutoring were held by: Liudmyla Remnova, Head of the Department of Personnel Management and Labour Economics, Project Coordinator; Alla Kholodnytska, Associate Professor of the Department of Personnel Management and Business Technologies, Head of the Tutoring and Mentoring Centre; Alla Nitchenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Law Enforcement and General Legal Disciplines, Coordinator of the Tutoring for Freshmen Programme, and a guest expert, psychologist Tetiana Detsiuk.
The School participants took part in the offline team building event “Tutor’s Skills: Communication, Leadership and Teamwork”, which was aimed at developing key skills for successful tutoring.

The programme of the School of Tutoring covered such issues as organising group and individual tutoring, learning the basic algorithms of tutor work, developing communication skills, leadership qualities, and effective teamwork. In addition, the participants learnt the basics of planning tutoring sessions, monitoring performance and identifying areas for tutee development, as well as tutor reporting on performance. All participants filled in feedback questionnaires and were tested to determine their level of leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

This year, more than 50 students of the Chernihiv Polytechnic National University received certificates of successful completion of the School of Tutoring (17-19 June and 24-26 September), which will significantly improve the quality of the process of adaptation of first-year students to student life.
