Training on Complex Muscle Tone Correction

On September 21–22, 2026, a two-day training session “Correction of Complex Muscle Tone: Spasticity and Casting” took place in Lviv. Practical training was organized as part of the project “Trauma Rehabilitation for Ukraine (TRUE),” implemented by a consortium of Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and Charitable Foundation “Patients of Ukraine,” in partnership with Charitable Foundation Protez Hub, the Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapists, and the Ukrainian Society of Speech and Language Therapy. The project was made possible with support from Switzerland, provided through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The aim of the educational event was to familiarize participants with theoretical foundations and practical skills of serial casting and splinting in cases of spasticity and contractures following brain injury, as well as adjacent approaches to muscle tone control (in particular, botulinum toxin therapy); to develop clinical reasoning for selecting tactics, outcome measurement, and safe application of techniques based on evidence. The training was conducted by Teresa Clark, certified trainer, expert in physical therapy at Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (London, UK).

25 physical therapists from all regions of Ukraine were selected to participate in the training. Chernihiv Polytechnic National University was represented by Oleh Vynohradov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Rehabilitation, guarantor of the Educational-Professional Program “Physical Therapy”.

During two intensive days, training participants mastered practical skills in applying Scotchcast / Soft Cast to support active goal achievement, including techniques of applying serial plaster casts to the elbow, wrist, and ankle joint, making a walking boot and knee splint.

The staff of the Department of Physical Rehabilitation expresses sincere gratitude to the event organizers and partners. The experience gained through participation in the training will serve as a basis for introducing new practical modules into the educational process under the “Physical Therapy” educational program.
