PHILOLOGY AND KARATE: THE PATH TO EXCELLENCE!

We proudly congratulate our philology student Agata Katkova (B11 Philology, Institute of Environmental Management and Humanities) on an extraordinary achievement that proves true strength can be expressed both in words and in spirit. The talented young woman earned her black belt, 1st Dan (Shodan) – a symbol not only of mastery but also of a new stage in the world of karate.

The path to the black belt was not easy for Agata. To qualify for the exam, she had to prove her skills through victories: becoming a Ukrainian champion and a medalist in European competitions. Beyond her sports achievements, she also needed to demonstrate a deep understanding of Kyokushin Karate philosophy, know the principles of techniques, and even be able to judge competitions.

The exam itself consisted of several challenging parts:

  • Techniques – perfect precision of movements, both stationary and while moving.
  • Kata (型) – a kind of poetry of movement, formal exercises where every element is honed to perfection. For a philology student, this can be compared to a perfectly constructed sentence, where everything is in its right place.
  • Kumite (fights) – the most exhausting challenge: ten consecutive matches without rest, each time with a new opponent. This tests not only physical strength but also inner endurance.

A new stage: Receiving the black belt is not the end of the journey but the beginning of a new chapter. It is a recognition that discipline, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence are essential both in sports and in studies.

Currently, Agata is waiting for her official belt, which will arrive from Japan – the birthplace of karate. It is there that black belts are internationally registered and certificates are issued, confirming an athlete’s level worldwide. This makes her achievement even more honorable and significant.

Our student has proven that it is possible to harmoniously combine deep knowledge of philology with mastery in martial arts. Her story is inspiring and a vivid example of how the power of words and the power of spirit together can reach true heights.
