Literary translation as a path to a future profession: translation contest for high school students held by the department of foreign philology at Сhernihiv Рolytechnic National University

On April 3, 2025, the Department of Foreign Philology at Chernihiv Polytechnic National University solemnly recognized the creative and professional achievements of high school students in the field of literary translation. The translation contest of lyrical works by the renowned American poet Mary Oliver—Invitation and The Sun—became a remarkable challenge for participants who adapted these texts into Ukrainian for the first time.

Poetry translation is an art that requires impeccable language proficiency, deep comprehension of meaning, rhythm, emotional expression, and artistic imagery. The contest jury, after reviewing 30 submitted works from high school students in Chernihiv and the region, highlighted the mastery, inspiration, and creative approach of the young translators.

Students from various educational institutions took part in the competition, including Lyceums No. 1, 12, 15, 22, Chernihiv Gymnasium # 11, School No. 19, as well as Tupychiv, Mykhailo-Kotsiubynske, Horodnia, and Oster Lyceums. Each translation was unique and contributed to the popularization of English-language poetry in Ukraine.

This contest was not only a creative challenge but also an important cultural milestone. For the first time, Mary Oliver’s poetry was translated into Ukrainian, making these works valuable for the literary community and readers in our country.

Six of the best participants received winner’s diplomas for their translations, which were praised for their accuracy, artistry, and deep understanding of the text. All participants received certificates, while 10th and 11th-grade students were awarded vouchers for additional academic credits to support their studies.

The translation contest was organized by the Department of Foreign Philology, which has been actively developing the “English Language and Translation” specialization since 2022. The department offers the educational program “B11 Philology,” aimed at preparing professional translators and philologists capable of successfully working at an international level.

We are proud of each participant and are confident that this contest has become a significant step toward their future professional success. May creativity and inspiration always be with you!
