GUEST LECTURE BY SUE LESCHEN: PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND CHALLENGES IN LEGAL TRANSLATION

On 24 November, students of the Philology programme attended a guest lecture delivered by professional translator and lawyer Sue Leschen from Manchester, UK, who is also a member of the UK’s Translators Association. The speaker shared her many years of experience in the field of legal translation.

During the lecture, Sue talked about her professional journey: interpreting in court hearings, working in prisons and hospitals, cooperating with migrants and asylum seekers, as well as supporting negotiations and working with players of the Manchester United football team.

Special attention was given to topics such as professional ethics, the importance of networking, the specifics of online interpreting, and typical mistakes made by beginners.

The lecturer emphasised the importance of lifelong learning, developing self-presentation skills, understanding the basics of management, and building communication competences and other soft skills.
