Guest lecture by an international expert on EU internal market law
On 9 April 2026, an online guest lecture was held for students and academic staff on the topic of “EU Internal Market Law”.
The lecture was delivered by Kaarli Eichhorn, a representative of the international law firm Jones Day.
During the lecture, the essence and significance of the European Union’s internal market as one of the key achievements of European integration were explored. Particular attention was paid to the historical background of its formation, notably the creation of the common market under the 1958 Treaty of Rome and the subsequent progress towards the formation of the single market.
The lecturer discussed in detail the current state of the EU internal market, the mechanisms of its functioning, and the legal instruments ensuring effective integration. The provisions of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement were examined, as well as the significance of the customs union for ensuring the free movement of goods.
Particular interest was aroused by the discussion of the four fundamental freedoms of the EU internal market, namely:
- – the free movement of persons;
- – the free movement of goods;
- – the free movement of capital;
- – the freedom to conduct business and provide services.
Particular emphasis was placed on the fundamental principles governing the functioning of the internal market, notably the principles of non-discrimination and mutual recognition, which ensure a level playing field for all market participants.
Participants also gained an insight into the process of states’ accession to the European Union and their integration into the single market, which is particularly relevant in the context of Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.
The event took place as part of the “Future of Europe Program – European Union Law Studies for Ukraine”.
We would like to thank the lecturer for the lecture and for the expert explanations on the issues discussed!
